Quantum Cloud Services Software Development Intern - 2027

IBM Quantum is seeking a motivated Software Developer Intern to join our engineering team. In this role, you will work alongside experienced software developers, researchers, and product teams to help build and enhance software that powers the IBM Quantum platform. As an intern, you will contribute to the development of applications, services, and tools that support quantum computing workloads.

You will gain hands-on experience working on real- world engineering challenges while learning modern software development practices in a collaborative and supportive environment. This internship provides an opportunity to develop technical skills, contribute to meaningful projects, and work with cutting-edge technologies that support scientific discovery and innovation. As a Software Developer Intern, you will contribute to the design, development, testing, and delivery of software that supports the IBM Quantum platform.

Working closely with experienced engineers, you will take ownership of assigned tasks and features, delivering production-quality code that contributes to team and project objectives. You will collaborate with developers, and cross-functional stakeholders to understand requirements, participate in technical discussions, and help implement effective solutions. You will be expected to actively engage in the software development lifecycle, including coding, testing, debugging, and documentation.

This role provides an opportunity to contribute across multiple areas of the software stack, including backend services, APIs, databases, cloud-native applications, and user-facing applications as needed, while working alongside a team focused on delivering reliable and impactful technology solutions. Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field. Experience developing software through coursework, internships, research projects, personal projects, hackathons, or open-source contributions. Knowledge of software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, testing, and debugging.

Familiarity with application development concepts, including APIs, relational databases (SQL), version control, and modern development workflows. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills, with a willingness to learn, apply feedback, and contribute effectively in a team environment. Previous internship, coursework or project experience involving backend systems, web applications, APIs, or databases. Familiarity with frontend development concepts and modern web frameworks.

Exposure to cloud computing, distributed systems, or containerized applications. Experience working on team-based software projects. Interest in quantum computing, scientific computing, AI, or emerging technologies.
