About IEX IEX is an exchange operator and technology company dedicated to innovating for performance in capital markets. Founded in 2012, IEX launched a new kind of securities exchange in 2016 that combines a transparent business model and unique architecture designed to protect investors. Today, IEX applies its proprietary technology and experience to drive performance across asset classes, serve investors, and advocate for transparent and competitive markets.
About the Role
Platform Engineering builds and supports the automation, provisioning, CI/CD, developer tooling, and observability used by IEX technology teams. As an intern, you will work with platform engineers and partners across Technology to improve the systems that support IEX’s Linux-based infrastructure. We’re software engineers who love infrastructure.
We treat the platforms we build as products for the engineers who use them, making common workflows easier to automate, monitor, and troubleshoot while maintaining the operational discipline required by production systems. You will apply programming and problem-solving skills to real operational work: automating repeatable tasks, improving deployment and monitoring workflows, building useful dashboards and reports, and documenting how tools are used.
With guidance from experienced engineers, you will contribute to a scoped project from discovery through implementation, testing, documentation, and user feedback. No prior finance experience is required. We are looking for someone who is curious about systems, enjoys learning deeply, and wants to build reliable tools used by other engineers. About You
- Curious, self-motivated, and eager to learn from experienced engineers.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Organized and detail-oriented.
- A collaborative team player who can work effectively with technical and non-technical partners.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Interested in IEX’s mission to build fairer and more transparent markets.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and improve software for Linux provisioning, environment checks, deployment workflows, and reporting.
- Contribute to CI/CD workflows and supporting tools used to build, test, and deploy internal services.
- Build or improve dashboards and monitoring that make platform health and environment status easier to understand.
- Integrate internal tools and third-party APIs to collect, query, and report on operational data.
- Work with platform engineers and internal users to identify opportunities to improve our toolset, propose solutions, and document operational processes.
- Test changes, troubleshoot issues, participate in code reviews and design sessions, and use Git to collaborate.
Your Background:
- Undergraduate student working toward a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Administration, Information Technology, or a similar field.
- You enjoy programming in languages such as Rust, Go, or Python and automating tasks with Bash.
- You enjoy experimenting with Linux, including distributions such as Ubuntu, CentOS, or RHEL, and perhaps a Linux desktop environment.
- Some experience working with third-party APIs and building API clients.
- Experience with Linux installation or administration, virtualization, Linux storage technologies, or Ansible and other automation tools is a plus.
What You’ll Gain:
- Hands-on experience with Linux infrastructure, automation, CI/CD, observability, and developer tooling.
- Mentorship and collaboration with engineers responsible for production-facing internal platforms.
- The opportunity to ship a scoped improvement and see how it is tested, documented, and used by internal customers.
Our job titles may span more than one career level. The starting annual base pay is $45.00/hour for this NY-based position.
