Enterprise Sustainability & Impact Intern - Modeling & Analytics In this role, you will support Northwestern Mutual's Enterprise Sustainability & Impact team and work alongside your hiring manager, mentor, and team on an enterprise-relevant project. This role offers the opportunity to apply quantitative and analytical methods to explore climate- and environmental-related risks, identify meaningful trends and patterns, and support business-relevant insights that contribute to enterprise resilience, sustainability, and long-term business performance.

The project scope and analytical approach may be shaped by business needs as well as the selected candidate's background, experience, and perspective. Job responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting research and analyzing climate, environmental, economic, geospatial, financial, and other relevant datasets to identify trends, patterns, and potential business implications.
  • Applying quantitative and analytical methods to explore climate- and environmental-related risks and opportunities, using approaches appropriate to the project, available data, and candidate expertise.
  • Developing clear data visualizations, which may include maps, dashboards, charts, or other visual analytical products, to communicate findings and support decision-making.
  • Translating complex analytical findings into concise, business-relevant insights and recommendations for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Preparing executive-ready presentations, written summaries, and other materials for the Enterprise Sustainability & Impact team and cross-functional business partners.
  • Contributing to the development of repeatable tools, methodologies, or processes that can support future analysis and decision-making.
  • Collaborating cross-functionally to understand business context, test assumptions, and strengthen the relevance of the work.

Bring Your Best! What this role needs - minimum qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a master's or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental, Resource, or Agricultural Economics; Geography or Geospatial Science; Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics; Risk Management & Insurance; Climate Science, Environmental Science, Sustainability; Economics, Finance; or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Available to participate in a full-time, onsite internship in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during Summer 2027.
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Demonstrated quantitative, analytical, research, and problem-solving ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analytical findings clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Commitment to high ethical standards, data integrity, confidentiality, and responsible data stewardship.

Preferred skills and proficiencies

  • Experience applying quantitative methods—such as econometrics, statistical or financial modeling, valuation, and scenario or sensitivity analysis—to evaluate uncertainty, risks, and potential outcomes.
  • Proficiency with analytical tools such as Python or R; data visualization platforms such as Power BI or Tableau; and/or Geographic Information Systems such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
  • Experience preparing, analyzing, quality-checking, and documenting large, complex, or multi-source datasets.
  • Familiarity with climate, hazard, weather, environmental, and socioeconomic data used in climate risk analysis, including sources such as NOAA, Climate Central, FEMA, the U.S. Census Bureau, or comparable datasets.
  • Ability to critically assess assumptions, costs, risks, benefits, and alternatives; communicate findings clearly through oral, written, and visual formats; and offer constructive perspectives in consultative discussions.
  • Demonstrated initiative, intellectual curiosity, and learning agility, with the ability to work independently, collaborate across teams, and manage multiple priorities. Prior internship or professional experience in a corporate, consulting, financial services, insurance, sustainability, or related environment is preferred; insurance or financial services experience is a plus.
