Applications Engineering Intern (Wireless Communications, Embedded Software & O-RAN) Internship/Working Student (Masters/PhD) Location Munich On Site
About the Role
Wireless, RF, and embedded software prototypes are among the fastest ways we learn what will work in the field. This internship places you alongside a Field Applications team working on real customer and internal challenges spanning cellular (5G/6G), O-RAN systems, CU/DU server-level integration, RF system bring-up, embedded Linux, software validation, and application-level development. Mentorship and structured check-ins are built in, and you will be expected to drive an applied technical project to a clear outcome by the end of the internship.
What You will Work On (
Core Responsibilities
- ) Develop and showcase wireless, RF, embedded software, and O-RAN proof-of-concept (PoC) solutions that demonstrate new technologies in real-world scenarios.
- Build and execute test setups, including bench measurements, server and network configuration, logging, repeatable test procedures, and basic automation where useful.
- Analyse cellular (5G/6G) and O-RAN system behaviour across radio, O-RU, O-DU, and O-CU interfaces using software tools and lab instrumentation to identify issues, interpret results, and propose next engineering steps.
- Develop embedded and server-side software in C/C++ and/or Python for platform bring-up, data capture, control, integration, automation, and system evaluation.
- Investigate technical questions from internal teams or customers and summarize findings in clear, actionable reports.
- Present technical results to internal stakeholders, and when appropriate, support the team in customer-facing discussions.
- Example Internship Deliverables (4-6 Months) A working PoC demo plus a short technical report (setup, results, limitations, next steps) A repeatable test plan, with optional lightweight automation, for a wireless/RF subsystem or an O-RAN CU/DU integration workflow A graphical user interface coupled with embedded software, server-side software, and hardware A Recommendations brief for a customer-relevant use case (what worked, what did not, what we should do next)
Requirements
- Current Masters or PhD student in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Communications Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a related field (enrolled throughout the internship)
- Strong academic foundation in wireless communications and embedded software, with an understanding of RF fundamentals and networked systems.
- Familiarity with at least one of: 5G/NR concepts, O-RAN architecture, CU/DU software, Linux networking, SDRs, RF front-end blocks, antennas, satellite communication, beamforming, joint communication and sensing (JCAS/ISAC), or embedded bring-up
- Experience with embedded Linux, Linux-based servers, networking concepts, microcontrollers, or FPGA/RTL concepts. Programming ability in C/C++ and/or Python for embedded development, system integration, lab automation, scripting, or validation
- Demonstrated hands-on problem-solving through research, projects, labs, or prior internships Clear technical communication: able to explain what you tried, what happened, and what it means Nice to Have AI/ML
- Experience
- Experience with lab instrumentation (spectrum analyzer, VNA, signal generator, oscilloscope) Interest in power circuits/subsystems as they relate to communications platforms
- Prior work with test automation, data analysis, or tooling (e.g., Git, CI basics, MATLAB)
